CGI animation - Lawnmover

A 66-second 3D product animation of a lawnmower, showcasing precision hard-surface modeling, mechanical animation, and realistic outdoor environment rendering. Full-cycle production demonstrating the ability to handle technically complex machinery — from rotating blades and moving wheels to engine details and surface materials — in a photorealistic outdoor context.

Concept: A comprehensive 3D product visualization of a lawnmower that transforms a technical piece of garden equipment into a visually engaging story. The piece demonstrates how CGI can showcase complex machinery — its mechanical precision, build quality, and functional design — in a way that static photography cannot.

1. Project Objectives:

  • Create a photorealistic 3D animation that showcases the lawnmower's engineering, design, and functional features in a dynamic outdoor environment.

  • Demonstrate ability to handle technically complex hard-surface modeling with mechanical accuracy — rotating blades, moving wheels, engine components, adjustment mechanisms.

  • Deliver product visualization content suitable for e-commerce, marketing campaigns, technical documentation, and brand presentations for garden/outdoor equipment industry.

2. Project Scope:

  • End-to-end production of a 66-second product animation: 3D modeling → mechanical rigging → animation → environment setup → rendering → compositing → final delivery.

  • Deliverables: Master animation optimized for web and marketing platforms, plus still renders for product pages and catalogs.

  • Toolkit: Cinema 4D / Blender for modeling and animation, Redshift for photorealistic rendering, After Effects for compositing and final mastering.

3. Content Planning:

  • Designed a shot list structured around product features: overall design → mechanical components in action → adjustment mechanisms → close-up details → environmental context (lawn cutting demonstration).

  • Planned camera movements to showcase the mower from multiple angles — beauty shots, functional demonstrations, macro details of engineering features.

  • Defined the visual language: outdoor lighting (natural sunlight), realistic materials (painted metal, matte plastic, rubber wheels, grass interaction), and environmental storytelling.

4. Production:

  • Modeled the complete lawnmower with high technical detail: engine housing, cutting deck, rotating blades, wheel assemblies, height adjustment mechanisms, handles, controls, and all visible mechanical components.

  • Created mechanical rigging for animated parts: rotating blades, spinning wheels, moving adjustment levers, and any functional elements that demonstrate the mower in operation.

  • Built PBR materials matching real-world surfaces: painted metal with proper roughness and clear coat, matte plastic housings, rubber wheels with tread patterns, chrome or brushed metal accents.

  • Created outdoor environment: grass surface, ground plane, atmospheric lighting to place the product in realistic working context.

  • Animated mechanical motion: blade rotation, wheel movement, and any operational demonstrations showing the mower's function.

  • Rendered in Redshift with outdoor lighting setup — natural sunlight, realistic shadows, ambient occlusion, and proper material response to environmental light.

5. Post-production:

  • Compositing in After Effects: integrating render passes (beauty, shadows, ambient occlusion, depth), enhancing material realism and environmental integration.

  • Color grading to achieve natural outdoor lighting feel — bright, clean, professional aesthetic suitable for garden/outdoor product marketing.

  • Added subtle enhancements: grass interaction details, dust/particle effects where relevant, and final polish to match professional product photography standards.

  • Final mastering for web and marketing platforms, optimized for both video content and still frame extraction.

6. Results:

  • Delivered a photorealistic product animation that showcases complex garden machinery with technical precision and visual appeal.

  • The piece demonstrates ability to handle mechanical hard-surface modeling — a specialized skill highly valued by manufacturers of garden equipment, power tools, agricultural machinery, and outdoor products.

  • Created versatile content usable across multiple marketing channels: e-commerce product pages, technical documentation, brand presentations, and social media advertising.

  • The project extends the portfolio's technical capabilities into the outdoor/garden equipment industry — a market segment with consistent demand for high-quality product visualization.
